Meet Alec Cassel

I graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. I have always enjoyed service and with Camden being so close to home, DSW is a great opportunity to impact lives and grow in faith. My ministry site is Hopeworks working with the C.R.I.B. staff and I am very excited. In my time here, I have learned more about Camden, made lasting relationships, and continued my strong faith in Jesus and His Church. Traveling and hiking are both big passions of mine because I get to explore different cultures while also enjoying God’s creation. I have seen the Catholic Church in many different areas around the world including Africa, the Caribbean and Europe.

Ryan and Sarah returned for a second year! It was also quite an international year, hosting Fee from the German ARSP program, and Christophe from France who joined us in service for 3 months. Pictured here at a local fundraiser event.

2015- 16 Community

Johnny, Sarah, Mike (former director), Elizabeth, Ryan

What a year! We loved our placements, and we really grew in community. Orientation was at Camp Desales in Michigan which helped us learn how to go into the year with a mindset of living and serving well.

A true community is not just about being geographically close to someone or part of the same social web network. It’s about feeling connected and responsible for what happens. Humanity is our ultimate community, and everyone plays a crucial role.

2014- 15 Community

Mike (former director), Brooke, Abbey, Father Mike

The first all female household! Small but mighty, Abbey and Brooke formed strong bonds during the year and especially in their post-service life.

2013- 14 Community

Bernard was the Service Year that year, but he lived with other volunteers throughout the year, like Delia and Kathleen pictured here. Serving at Hopeworks and leading groups at DSW, he was fully immersed in the experience and we love him for his energy and excitement!

2012- 13 Community

Ethan was our only official Service Year that year, but he lived in community with other volunteers and made a big difference at his site placement, Project Hope. He even stayed in Camden for several years when he was accepted into medical school!

2010- 11 Community

Mike, Father Mike, Tom, and Tim.

The originals! The first DSW’s in Camden, the guinea pigs, the only all-guys group.

What about DSW in Philadelphia?

DSW was a thriving volunteer community in Philadelphia in the early 2000’s before it moved to Camden in 2009. Sadly we don’t have any photos on hand to help remember those years. If you participated in DSW-Philly or have photos to share, get in touch with us! We’d love to share your story too.
